According to the CCP, these were the \u201cheretical\u201d activities of a \u201ccult.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pastor Yang Zhijin was sentenced to three years in prison, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/news\/elderly-christian-among-31-sentenced-in-china-house-church-crackdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">along<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with 30 of his congregants, for \u201cusing a cult organization to undermine the implementation of the law.\u201d The CCP was referring to Yang\u2019s house church, a congregation not part of the state-sanctioned Chinese church, in Henan Province, which prosecutors allege was part of the banned Full Range Church network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether or not that\u2019s the case \u2013 under threat of prison, Yang <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Verdict-Zengdu-District-May-21-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">denied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> it \u2013 Full Range itself would hardly be considered a cult outside China. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/news\/comprehensive-report-chinese-communist-party-authorities-launch-large-scale-persecution-of-the-all-ranges-church-in-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Founded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 1984 by Pastor Peter Xu, it fits squarely in the \u201cborn again\u201d Christian movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And yet, the CCP has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/duihua.org\/identifying-cult-organizations-in-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">listed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Full Range as a cult since 1995. At the time, the label was less a precise legal definition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cesnur.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/tjoc_2_1_3_irons.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">than<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a CCP designation for religious movements the state deemed politically dangerous, socially disruptive, or doctrinally \u201cheterodox.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Full Range\u2019s designation was somewhat of an outlier. House church networks don\u2019t usually receive this label, especially not those that follow mainstream branches of Christianity. Full Range, at that time, was one of China\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinasource.org\/articles\/spirit-empowered-chinese-house-churches-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">largest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> house church networks, with approximately tens of thousands of geographically dispersed congregants across hundreds of different individual groups. The church\u2019s size may have drawn the ire of Communist authorities; however it certainly wasn\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/all-sphere-word-of-life-born-again-churches-raided-throughout-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">because<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> their beliefs or practices deviated from fundamental Christian principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While China\u2019s legal system is largely opaque, Christian advocacy group ChinaAid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Verdict-Zengdu-District-May-21-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">obtained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the transcript of Yang\u2019s court decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The People\u2019s Court of Zengdu revealed in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Verdict-Zengdu-District-May-21-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">verdict<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the extent to which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">xie jiao<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (cult) law is now being used against even basic Christian beliefs. The prosecution claimed that Full Range \u201cspreads and promotes heretical teachings,\u201d which include: \u201cbelieving in Jesus leads to heaven, not believing leads to hell,\u201d \u201ceveryone is sinful and must confess and repent,\u201d \u201cbelieving in Jesus can cure diseases,\u201d and \u201ccrying for rebirth.\u201d The court found Yang guilty, saying his \u201cconduct constitutes the crime of organizing and using a cult organization to undermine the implementation of the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The court also determined Full Range \u201cinterfere[d] with freedom of marriage\u201d \u2013 a serious charge in a country where birth rates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/19\/china-population-falls-again-birthrate-record-low\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a new low in 2026 and a declining population threatens demographic collapse. How did Full Range interfere? It worked to solve Beijing\u2019s problem by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinaaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Verdict-Zengdu-District-May-21-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">creating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a \u201cyouth marriage group\u201d where it introduced \u201cpartners to marriage-age youth in the church.\u201d In other words, a voluntary matchmaking program was labeled a crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Yang\u2019s conviction shows, Beijing can imprison the faithful for acting on the most basic tenets of Christian faith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Designating religious groups as cults has a long history of being political rather than spiritual \u2013 not just in China, of course \u2013 and anti-cult laws predate both communism and the CCP. In 1725, the Qing Dynasty first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/what-is-a-xie-jiao\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">branded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Christianity xie jiao, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/cambridge-world-history\/religious-change-in-east-asia\/9F140EA56C77C0981A1A6877484B2386\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Western influence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the CCP took over China in 1949, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265385469_Heretical_Doctrines_Reactionary_Secret_Societies_Evil_Cults_Labelling_Heterodoxy_in_20th-Century_China\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rebranded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201ccult\u201d to \u201ccounterrevolutionary,\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/taiwantoday.tw\/AMP\/culture\/taiwan-review\/26312\/the-catholic-church-since-1949\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">expelled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Catholic and Protestant missionaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, China and its leader Xi Jinping try to control religion with the same iron grip used on everything else, dictating beliefs and banning \u201ccults.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How does the CCP decide what groups are cults? China\u2019s Supreme People\u2019s Court offered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/journal-of-law-and-religion\/article\/freedom-in-handcuffs-religious-freedom-in-the-constitution-of-china\/55969679D7541B29CAA7477AE1503627\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">definition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for a cult in 1999: \u201cillegal organizations established under the guise of religion, qigong, or other names, deifying their leaders, fabricating and spreading superstitious heresies, and recruiting and controlling members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This definition is deeply ironic coming from the communist cult that leads China. Xi has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkchina.sg\/society\/chinese-youth-imbued-xi-jinping-thought-school-curriculum1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">placed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> his own \u201cThought\u201d into the constitution, party charter, propaganda apps, and children\u2019s textbooks, where pupils are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpmchina.org\/directors-blog\/chinas-new-school-textbooks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">taught<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that \u201cGrandpa Xi Jinping has always cared for us.\u201d Xi has even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/president-xi-is-helmsman-chinas-rejuvenation-says-party-official-2021-11-12\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inherited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Mao\u2019s nickname as the CCP\u2019s \u201cHelmsman.\u201d The object of worship has changed; the politics have not. Few have cultivated a cult of personality more assiduously than Mao, and Xi seeks his level of deification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet, the party fails to see the irony. From 1998 and 2016, Chinese courts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/duihua.org\/detailed-court-statistics-on-article-300-part-i\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">accepted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 23,000 cult cases and acquitted just 69.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The court\u2019s prevalent use of \u201cheretical\u201d in Yang\u2019s case to describe basic Christian values only reinforces this point: the religious orthodoxy his church\u2019s beliefs challenged was Chinese Communism. As the People\u2019s Court put it, Yang was found guilty of using \u201ca cult organization to deceive the masses who did not know the truth.\u201d The implication being, of course, that the CCP holds a monopoly on truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Yang\u2019s conviction shows, basic tenets of Christianity can be legally considered cult-like by the CCP, if convenient. Believing in Jesus, heaven and hell, the commandment to be fruitful and multiply, or Original Sin can end in a prison sentence.
