{"id":1738,"date":"2026-08-04T04:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T04:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asianewscast.com\/2026\/08\/04\/us-stocks-near-record-high-oil-falls-as-trump-claims-iran-talks-under-way\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T04:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T04:30:12","slug":"us-stocks-near-record-high-oil-falls-as-trump-claims-iran-talks-under-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asianewscast.com\/?p=1738","title":{"rendered":"US stocks near record high, oil falls as Trump claims Iran talks under way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US stock market has surged to the cusp of its all-time high amid conflicting signals about the status of negotiations on ending the US-Israel war on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1.5 percent on Monday, leaving the benchmark index just shy of its closing record of 7,620.90 set on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.1 percent, closing 4.3 percent below its all-time peak of 27,093.90, also set on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>The narrower Dow Jones Industrial Average, which tracks 30 blue-chip companies, rose 1.3 percent to hit a record high of 53,178.41.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMagnificent Seven\u201d tech giants were at the forefront of the rally, with all apart from Apple making substantial gains.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook parent company Meta Platforms rose 6 percent, while Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet climbed between 4.4 percent and 4.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Chip giant Nvidia rose 2.9 percent, while electric vehicle maker Tesla jumped 3.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The broad-based rally continued in after-hours trading, with futures tied to the S&amp;P 500 rising more than 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am extremely surprised by the magnitude of the rally,\u201d Melissa Brown,\u00a0managing director of\u00a0Investment Decision Research at SimCorp, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes against the backdrop of relatively negative sentiment, and without a real fundamental reason to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude, the primary international benchmark for oil prices, fell about 5 percent on Monday, before climbing as markets opened in Asia on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Brent futures were hovering at about $85 per barrel as of 04:00 GMT, up more than 1.3 percent from Monday\u2019s close.<\/p>\n<p>Asian stock markets fell on Tuesday after seeing gains in early morning trading.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s Kospi, which has been on a roller coaster in 2026 amid furious demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence, was down 1 percent as of 04:00 GMT.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 0.7 percent, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng Index dipped 0.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The latest market moves came as Washington and Tehran offered conflicting accounts of the communications taking place between the sides.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump said on Monday that talks with Iran were under way and that he wanted to give Tehran \u201cevery last chance\u201d to sign a deal before facing renewed strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comments came a day after he announced that he had called off plans to launch the \u201cbiggest attack since World War II\u201d following discussions with Gulf leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, \u2060earlier on Monday told a news conference that Tehran was not engaged in talks with Washington and that it had no meetings with US officials planned.<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei \u2060said Iranian officials were currently engaged in negotiations with Oman on allowing ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz and that issues between the US and Iran would need to be addressed in the \u201cnext stages\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-08-03T143937Z_1289421046_RC21RMA96SCQ_RTRMADP_3_USA-STOCKS-1785805750.jpg?resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"\"><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US stock market has surged to the cusp of its all-time high amid conflicting signals about the status of negotiations on ending the US-Israel war on Iran.
