Ferry and flight disruptions are expected.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/7\/11\/hundreds-of-thousands-evacuated-as-typhoon-bavi-barrels-towards-china\">Typhoon Bavi<\/a> made landfall in China\u2019s eastern province of Zhejiang, also bringing heavy rains to Japan\u2019s Okinawa prefecture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4827869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4827869\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4827869\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/INTERACTIVE-Typhoon-Dolphin-closes-in-on-Japan-AUGUST-4-2026-1785831710.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-Typhoon Dolphin closes in on Japan-AUGUST 4-2026-1785831710\" data-interactive=\"true\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4827869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-we-expect-from-the-typhoon-through-the-week\">What can we expect from the typhoon through the week?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>On Tuesday, the typhoon passed the Ogasawara Islands.<\/li>\n<li>On Wednesday, high winds will continue over the Ogasawara region.<\/li>\n<li>On Thursday, the typhoon will approach the Daito Islands and the Amami Islands.<\/li>\n<li>On Friday, it is due to hit Okinawa Island.<\/li>\n<li>On Saturday, strong winds and torrential rains are expected to continue..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can track <a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.earth\/storms\/dolphin-2026\/\">Typhoon Dolphin on Zoom Earth<\/a>, an online platform with satellite imagery that shows weather patterns and is particularly useful for tracking storms.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-this-storm-called-typhoon-dolphin\">Why is this storm called Typhoon Dolphin?<\/h2>\n<p>The typhoon has been named after Hong Kong\u2019s Chinese white dolphins.<\/p>\n<p>Individual hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are named by the Typhoon Committee at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which maintains premade rotating lists of names.<\/p>\n<p>For hurricanes originating in the Atlantic Ocean, these lists comprise typically male or female first names that are easy to remember.<\/p>\n<p>The WMO\u2019s lists of names for the western North Pacific\u2019s storms include local animals, plants and cultural items. Dolphin was Hong Kong\u2019s contribution.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"where-else-could-dolphin-have-an-impact\">Where else could Dolphin have an impact?<\/h2>\n<p>Besides Japan, the northern and eastern regions of Taiwan are likely to experience heavy rain, strong winds and high coastal swells due to the typhoon.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, coastal regions of southeastern and eastern China may experience heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/7\/26\/typhoon-noul-makes-landfall-in-china-with-hundreds-of-thousands-evacuated\">Typhoon Noul<\/a> hit southern China, including Hong Kong, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the region and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in Guangdong province.<\/p>\n<h2>Is a typhoon the same thing as a cyclone?<\/h2>\n<p>Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all essentially the same thing. The main difference is where they originate. All three are storm systems with winds exceeding 118km\/h (73mph).<\/p>\n<p>Typhoons occur in the northwestern Pacific Ocean and frequently hit the Philippines and Japan. Typhoon season is most common between May and October, but the storms can form year-round. The strength of a typhoon has various classification scales with the most severe storms named super typhoons.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cyclones occur in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, often impacting countries from Australia all the way to Mozambique. Cyclone season typically runs from November to April.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific and often affect the East Coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The strength of a hurricane is measured on a wind scale from 1 to 5. A Category 1 hurricane will bring sustained winds of 119-153km\/h (74-95mph) whereas a Category 5 storm can exceed 252km\/h (157mph).<\/p>\n<p>Different agencies use different wind scales. Japan\u2019s Meteorological Agency does not use the 1-5 category system applied to Atlantic hurricanes, and the wind-speed boundaries do not perfectly align.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-different-types-of-storm\">What are the different types of storm?<\/h2>\n<p>There are several stages a storm can move through before it becomes a typhoon, each with differing consequences if it makes landfall.<\/p>\n<h3>Tropical depression<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The weakest stage of a storm<\/li>\n<li>Maximum sustained winds: up to 63 km\/h (39mph)<\/li>\n<li>Organised system but below \u201cstorm\u201d strength<\/li>\n<li>Damage: minor, localised impacts, such as short spells of heavy rain, strong winds, localised street floods. Concerns are largely limited to flash floods and landslides in vulnerable regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tropical storm<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Windspeed: about 63\u201388km\/h (39-55mph).<\/li>\n<li>Receives a name at this stage<\/li>\n<li>Damage: moderate. Tropical storms can cause disruptions to travel and damage crops. Additionally, they can damage weaker trees, power lines and weaker structures, such as road signs and light roofs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Severe tropical storm<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Stronger but still below typhoon<\/li>\n<li>Windspeeds: 89-117km\/h (55-73mph)<\/li>\n<li>Damage: serious but not catastrophic.
