[Moises Castillo\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"l-col l-col--8--centered\">\n<div class=\"article-info m--desktop-b-30 m--b-mobile-20\">\n<div class=\"byline byline--no-avatars\">\n<div class=\"byline-content\">\n<div class=\"contributors-list contributors-list--byline\"><span class=\"contributors-list__by-prefix\">By <\/span>News Agencies<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-dates\">\n<div class=\"date-simple\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Published On 4 Aug 2026<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">4 Aug 2026<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg--all-content gallery-content\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<p>Guatemalan authorities have issued the country\u2019s second-highest emergency alert level after a major eruption of Central America\u2019s most active volcano, prompting the evacuation of nearby villages.<\/p>\n<p>Fuego\u2019s eruption on Monday morning had intensified by nightfall, with lava flows and huge plumes of ash rising about six kilometres (four miles) into the air.<\/p>\n<p>The alert level is one below the highest level of red, which indicates the most serious emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Officials began evacuating two villages near the volcano on Monday, which is located 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the capital, Guatemala City.<\/p>\n<p>Guatemala\u2019s Institute of Volcanology warned in a statement that the volcano was \u201cmoving towards a more explosive phase\u201d, with ash plumes rising to more than 6,000 metres (19,685 feet), and ashfall affecting nearby communities.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also warned of hot volcanic debris flows down Fuego\u2019s slopes, with communities on the western and southern flanks at the greatest risk.<\/p>\n<p>Guatemala lies on the Pacific \u201cRing of Fire\u201d and experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.<\/p>\n<p>More than 500 people were evacuated after another eruption of Fuego last year, while an eruption in 2023 forced around 1,200 people from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Fuego\u2019s deadliest recent eruption occurred in 2018, when rivers of volcanic material swept down its slopes, killing 215 people, leaving a similar number missing and devastating a nearby village.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"l-col l-col--text-center l-col--10--centered gallery-images\">\n<figure class=\"gallery-image\">\n<div class=\"react_lightgallery_item\">\n<div class=\"responsive-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gallery-image-item gallery-image-key-4828755-4828627\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP26216449218823-1785852085.jpg?fit=1170%2C780&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Lava flows out of the crater of the Fuego Volcano\" aria-label=\"Gallery image 2 of 9, Click to open in gallery view, Lava flows out of the crater of the Fuego Volcano\" role=\"button\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"gallery-4828755-0\">Fuego&#8217;s eruption on Monday morning had intensified by nightfall.
