He said the measure would ensure that people are \u201cimmediately returned to their point of departure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to France, Reform said: \u201cWe will always stand up for British interests and protect our people, whether [President] Emmanuel Macron likes it or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zia Yusuf, Reform UK\u2019s spokesperson for home affairs, claimed France \u201csent us 200,000 illegal migrants, including murderers and terrorists\u201d, and that marines would return them anyway to the French coast.<\/p>\n<p>But groups and analysts say the proposal is unrealistic and could lead to a diplomatic dispute.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Military Justice said international maritime laws do not \u201cpermit a State\u2019s armed forces to go into the territorial waters of another state to seize and return people to that state. Indeed, in most cases, to do so may well amount to a flagrant breach of these conventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unilateral action on Britain\u2019s part \u201cwould have a major diplomatic effect, prompting France to suspend existing cooperation, such as intelligence sharing and beach patrols in Northern France\u201d, Mihnea Cuibus, senior researcher at the University of Oxford\u2019s Migration Observatory, told Al Jazeera. \u201cIt is also possible that France would attempt to repel British ships in the Channel to prevent further returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Implementing the plan would therefore not be \u201cas straightforward as simply ordering the deployment of the Royal Navy into French territory\u201d, Cuibus said, but would require a bilateral deal that France looks unlikely to acquiesce to.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"waste-of-military-resources\">\u2018Waste of military resources\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Sarah Singer, professor of refugee law at the University of London, described the plan as a \u201ccomplete waste of military resources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As France has made its opposition clear, attempting to return people would have \u201chuge diplomatic repercussions between the UK and its nearest neighbours\u201d, with potential consequences affecting issues of mutual interest like trade and intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>While returning asylum seekers could be read as an \u201cact of aggression\u201d by France, it would also run counter to international law, said Singer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSummary expulsions are contrary to UK and European law, which requires those seeking protection to have their cases individually assessed to determine if they can safely be removed,\u201d the lecturer told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>The same strategy was touted in 2022 under the Conservative government of Boris Johnson and \u201cabandoned as the gimmick that it is\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Then, former Home Secretary Priti Patel claimed that the so-called Operation Isotrope would make crossing the Channel \u201cunviable\u201d, but the plan was abandoned after military officials raised concerns that it would be dangerous and leave them exposed to legal action.<\/p>\n<p>Former Navy Commander Tom Sharpe has voiced similar concerns over Reform\u2019s pledge, describing it as \u201csketchy in theory, dangerous in practice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sharpe said the Royal Navy could enter French waters and ports without permission only by invoking the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), a maritime treaty that establishes a general duty to rescue people in distress.<\/p>\n<p>This would put \u201csailors and marines in the invidious position of having to pretend a routine crossing was SOLAS, and then probably creating an actual one as they intervene\u201d, Sharpe said on X, calling the strategy \u201cdisingenuous at best\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"humanitarian-thing-to-do\">\u2018Humanitarian thing to do\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>On Tuesday, more than 150 people <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/8\/4\/more-than-150-people-rescued-in-english-channel-after-boat-catches-fire\">were rescued<\/a> as they attempted to cross the Channel when their vessel caught fire. Farage reacted to the news by pledging to \u201cput a stop to this\u201d. \u201cOur plan will saves [sic] lives,\u201d he said on X.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Richard Tice, Reform\u2019s deputy leader, said \u201crescue and return\u201d was the \u201chumanitarian thing to do\u201d. \u201cWe must stop people dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"aj-third-party-embed-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"consent-gate\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Monday said his government will be \u201crelentless\u201d in curbing the number of people arriving in the United Kingdom through the Channel, as the ruling Labour Party accused Reform of using migration to deflect attention from questions about its finances amid <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/5\/6\/follow-the-money-how-far-right-reform-uk-built-a-global-network\">reports of gifts<\/a> and donations to senior party figures.<\/p>\n<p>According to YouGov polling, if a general election were held tomorrow, 17 percent of Britons would vote for Reform, 19 percent would vote Labour and 14 percent would back the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Sarah Wolff, professor in international studies and global politics at Leiden University, noted that while military boats had worked in the past \u2013 the Italian Navy mission Mare Nostrum that operated between 2013 and 2014, which had medical facilities on board, was said to have saved tens of thousands of lives and allowed for asylum applications to be processed in Italy \u2013 Reform UK\u2019s scheme would instead \u201creturn migrants back to France and not take any responsibility for processing asylum applications\u201d, making it equivalent to a pushback.<\/p>\n<p>Before exiting the European Union in 2020, the UK had been able to return asylum seekers to the country of first entry under the Dublin Convention, which established the rule of first entry to avoid multiple asylum claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, it has no means to return them back to an EU country,\u201d Wolff told Al Jazeera. \u201cSo it is a bit ironic that (Reform UK, then known as the Brexit Party) which campaigned at the time to \u2018gain back control\u2019 is now offering solution to a post-Brexit migration situation it contributed to create.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ListenListen (6 mins) Save Click here to share on social media share-nodes Share facebookxwhatsapp-strokecopylink googleAdd Al Jazeera on Googleinfo Britain&#8217;s Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage holds a booklet that reads &#8216;Operation Fortress, Stopping the Invasion of Britain&#8217;
