prominent international rights group have condemned his solitary detention and demanded a restoration of his constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p>Amid heavy security on Wednesday, thousands of members and supporters of Khan\u2019s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held demonstrations across the country to call for his immediate release.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Khan, 73, served as Pakistan\u2019s premier from 2018 until April 2022 when he was removed in a no-confidence vote he alleged to be a military-enabled conspiracy hatched with the United States, an allegation both Washington and the military denied.<\/p>\n<p>As Khan held rallies challenging his removal, he was first briefly arrested in May 2023 and later imprisoned on August 5 that year on several charges of corruption and revealing state secrets. In December, the couple was sentenced to an additional <a href=\"\/news\/2025\/12\/20\/ex-pakistan-pm-imran-khan-wife-sentenced-to-17-years-in-corruption-case\">17 years in prison<\/a>\u00a0in a case involving state gifts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years. Thousands of days behind prison walls. Endless attempts to break his spirit. Yet they have failed,\u201d PTI posted on X on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe struggle for democracy, constitutional rule, and the people\u2019s right to choose their future does not end with arbitrary detentions,\u201d it said as PTI members organised protests in several cities across Pakistan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"aj-third-party-embed-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"consent-gate\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a statement emailed to Al Jazeera on Tuesday, the rights group Amnesty International said Khan has not seen his family for more than eight months and has had no meaningful access to his lawyers since December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor three years, Pakistan\u2019s authorities have systematically denied Imran Khan the right to a fair trial, subjected him to prolonged solitary confinement, and limited his access to medical care and visitation rights,\u201d Isabelle Lassee, Amnesty\u2019s acting regional director for South Asia, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>She urged Pakistani authorities to \u201cunconditionally restore\u201d the couple\u2019s right to see their family and lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth must be given access to adequate medical care and their solitary confinement, which is unlawful, should end immediately,\u201d Lassee said, adding that the authorities should not repeat \u201cthe unlawful and arbitrary crackdowns\u201d on PTI protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Two United Nations mechanisms have also separately concluded that Khan\u2019s treatment in jail falls short of international standards.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2024, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found Khan\u2019s detention \u201carbitrary\u201d, warning that, given his age, which is now 73, he was \u201cfacing an effective sentence of life imprisonment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In December, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards said Khan had been held in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day under constant camera surveillance, warning that the conditions could amount to torture.<\/p>\n<p>A separate statement raised similar concerns about Bibi\u2019s cell, which she described as unventilated, saying she had lost significant weight in custody.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"concerns-over-health\">Concerns over health<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Khan\u2019s health has become one of the defining disputes at the beginning of his fourth year in custody.<\/p>\n<p>He was diagnosed with a <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/2\/17\/imran-khans-sister-rejects-pakistan-govt-claim-jailed-ex-pms-vision-fine\">retinal condition<\/a> in his right eye in January and has since received five injections at a government hospital, allegedly without prior notice to his family or lawyers, according to the PTI.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Khan\u2019s petition seeking a transfer to a private hospital in Islamabad and access to doctors of his choice. The petition had been pending before the court since February.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure on the Pakistani government over Khan\u2019s custody and health has produced statements but not results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe right to adequate medical care is not a privilege granted at the discretion of the state. It is a constitutional, legal and moral obligation,\u201d Rida Hosain, a Lahore-based constitutional lawyer, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe frequent visuals of Khan\u2019s family and party members attempting to visit him and being obstructed by state officials are indefensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government rejected such accusations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObservations made by international organisations do not override the jurisdiction of Pakistan\u2019s independent courts or the findings of its competent institutions,\u201d Tallal Chaudhry, the minister of state for interior, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>He said Khan\u2019s detention conditions have been subject to \u201ccontinuous judicial oversight\u201d, adding that he has been provided \u201cdedicated accommodation, cooking arrangements, exercise facilities and other amenities that go well beyond what is ordinarily available to prisoners\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4831164\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4831164\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4831164\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AFP__20260805__C3ZL4NQ__v1__MidRes__PakistanPoliticsProtestKhan-1785931767.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Police personnel restrict Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party supporters as they stage a protest demanding the release of their jailed leader and the country&apos;s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in Lahore\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4831164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Police restrict PTI supporters as they protest for Khan\u2019s release in Lahore on August 5, 2026 [Arif Ali\/AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"relentless-prosecutions\">\u2018Relentless prosecutions\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Lawyer and PTI politician Abuzar Salman Niazi stopped short of assigning a motive behind Khan\u2019s detention but said a pattern was difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe relentless prosecutions, prolonged incarceration, restrictions on access to his lawyers and family, and the extraordinary obstacles in obtaining judicial relief suggest that considerations extending beyond the ordinary administration of justice are at play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But Chaudhry disputed the charge that the government was ignoring court orders on prison conditions. \u201cAny alleged violation is subject to judicial review,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Arif Ansar, analyst at the US-based advisory firm PoliTact, said as long as Pakistan\u2019s powerful military and governing political parties view Khan as a major political challenger, there is \u201clittle incentive for the state to facilitate his return to politics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese developments arguably make Khan\u2019s release less likely, not more. They point to an environment in which the establishment has fewer reasons to compromise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government has rejected any suggestion of a negotiated settlement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny relief must come through the judicial process, not through political negotiations,\u201d Chaudhry said. \u201cNo individual can receive preferential treatment or a political settlement outside the law. Accountability cannot be negotiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet analysts said it could be the military \u2013 and not court rulings or negotiations with the government \u2013 that could alter the political landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Ansar said Pakistan\u2019s politics have shifted when the military establishment\u2019s own strategic calculations have changed. \u201cIt could lead to court rulings or a political settlement altering the current calculus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone sympathetic to the PTI agreed that the state bears sole responsibility for the impasse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main obstacle to Imran Khan\u2019s release is his own political posture,\u201d Zaigham Khan, an Islamabad-based political commentator, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>He said the military wanted an apology from Khan over violence on May 9, 2023, during which PTI supporters attacked several military installations.
