flee to India following a student-led uprising, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made her strongest commitment yet to return, saying she is prepared to face arrest, imprisonment or even death, but cannot remain away from her supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I may be detained, I may be sent to prison,\u201d Hasina, 78, said in an audio address to journalists from New Delhi on Wednesday. \u201cThey may try to enforce verdicts issued in fabricated cases. He has been accused of murder, embezzlement, fraud \u2060and money laundering by the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before Hasina\u2019s address, which Shakib also joined, Prime Minister Rahman inaugurated a memorial museum dedicated to the 2024 uprising at Hasina\u2019s official residence. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who headed the interim administration after Hasina\u2019s ouster, also attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"o-political-future\">\u2018No political future\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Against such a backdrop of a rival government, widespread anger and a <a href=\"\/news\/2025\/11\/27\/after-death-sentence-bangladesh-ex-pm-hasina-gets-21-years-for-land-grab\">death sentence<\/a> looming over her head, Hasina delivered a defiant address, rejecting the widely accepted accounts of the July 2024 uprising, arguing instead that it was not a popular movement but a coordinated campaign to topple her government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may put me in jail, or they may kill me. Anything may happen. But still I have to go back,\u201d she said in response to a question asked by a journalist covering the New Delhi event.<\/p>\n<p>The former prime minister repeatedly framed her <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/8\/5\/toppled-bangladesh-leader-sheikh-hasina-to-speak-today-what-we-can-expect\">planned return<\/a> as an effort to \u201crestore democracy and promote national reconciliation\u201d, arguing that Bangladesh needed \u201chealing rather than confrontation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Among the members of Hasina\u2019s now-banned Awami League party, her announcement has rekindled hopes of a political comeback.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera reached out to five Awami League leaders. Three declined to comment. One senior leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: \u201cThe leader will definitely return, and we will all come out of our hiding places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another party activist, Shajidul Islam Shobuj, who has been hiding since the uprising, told Al Jazeera: \u201cWe are eagerly awaiting her return and are already working to reorganise the party.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<p>But leaders of the 2024 uprising say reconciliation cannot come before accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheikh Hasina can return to Bangladesh at any time if she has the ability to do so,\u201d Akhter Hossain, a former student leader and now a legislator from the National Citizen Party (NCP), told Al Jazeera. \u201cShe will have to face Bangladesh\u2019s judicial process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akhter said the Awami League had \u201cno political future\u201d unless it was held accountable for the \u201ccrimes committed during its time in power\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Many others who protested during the uprising have also received Hasina\u2019s announcement with scepticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe previously said she would not flee the country, yet she did. We do not believe she will return simply because she says she will,\u201d said Atikul Gazi, a 23-year-old who survived being shot at point-blank range by the security forces on August 5, 2024, but lost his left arm.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Whether Hasina returns voluntarily or not, he said the government should ensure she faced the judicial process.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"difficult-to-see-how\">\u2018Difficult to see how\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Experts say Hasina\u2019s \u201chigh-risk political gamble\u201d could determine the future of the Awami League while also testing the durability of the political order that emerged after her fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe does intend to actually return to Bangladesh,\u201d journalist and political analyst David Bergman told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReturning to Bangladesh gives her a chance of remaining politically relevant, of creating significant challenges and difficulties for the country\u2019s new government, and possibly changing the current political dynamic to the advantage of the Awami League,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But Bergman also argued that the Awami League continues to misread the political mood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil it recognises its own responsibility for the party\u2019s current demise, and acknowledges that Bangladesh is not the dystopian, failed country it seeks to portray, it is difficult to see how the Awami League can carve out a new role for itself in Bangladesh.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<p>If she returns to Bangladesh, it would not be Hasina\u2019s first return from exile.<\/p>\n<p>After the assassination of her father, Bangladesh\u2019s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and most of her family members in 1975, Hasina spent years in exile before returning to Bangladesh in 1981 to lead the Awami League, which was then in opposition.<\/p>\n<p>She was repeatedly arrested during the military rule in Dhaka before she stormed to power in 1996, governing the country for most of the next three decades.<\/p>\n<p>This time, however, the political landscape is markedly different as Hasina no longer faces just political opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Mubashar Hasan, a political observer and adjunct researcher at Western Sydney University\u2019s Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative, says Hasina\u2019s political challenges extend beyond the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, Sheikh Hasina\u2019s vow to return is a political strategy aimed at motivating and inspiring Awami League activists, many of whom have become demoralised since she left the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hasan said many party activists felt abandoned when Hasina fled Bangladesh in a military helicopter on August 5, 2024, reportedly without warning senior party leaders.<\/p>\n<p>But he also wondered if Hasina\u2019s gambit would work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my view, this announcement is intended to boost the morale of party supporters,\u201d he said. \u201cPersonally, I do not think that strategy will succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"nothing-more-than-empty-rhetoric\">\u2018Nothing more than empty rhetoric\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hasina\u2019s speech has also triggered new diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangladesh is outraged,\u201d the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. \u201cConvicted mass murderer Hasina and her mafia enterprise will never have a place in the polity of Bangladesh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said India allowing Hasina to use its territory to attack the Bangladeshi state was \u201can affront to the sovereignty of Bangladesh\u201d and \u201ca grievous insult to the martyrs of the July Revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also criticised New Delhi for failing to respond to Dhaka\u2019s request to extradite Hasina under the 2013 bilateral extradition treaty.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--connatix-ads\">\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads slot-3-placement\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Before Hasina\u2019s address, India\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian \u201cgovernment has no involvement whatsoever in it, neither does [the government] endorse any views that may be expressed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Dhaka, the parents of 17-year-old Shahriar Khan Anas, one of the 1,400 people killed during the 2024 uprising, had just returned from the inauguration of the memorial museum at Hasina\u2019s former residence.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about Hasina\u2019s plans to return, they only said: \u201cWe have no words today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But others who took part in the uprising were more direct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nothing more than empty rhetoric,\u201d said Risul Islam Rifat, a final-year journalism student at North South University, one of the epicentres of the 2024 protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite their political differences, today\u2019s political parties are united on one issue: Sheikh Hasina.
