[Mohnd Blal\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"l-col l-col--8--centered\">\n<div class=\"article-info m--desktop-b-30 m--b-mobile-20\">\n<div class=\"byline byline--no-avatars\">\n<div class=\"byline-content\">\n<div class=\"contributors-list contributors-list--byline\"><span class=\"contributors-list__by-prefix\">By <\/span>AP<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-dates\">\n<div class=\"date-simple\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Published On 6 Aug 2026<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">6 Aug 2026<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg--all-content gallery-content\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<p>Sudan\u2019s war is endangering the ancient pyramids of Meroe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as fighting and a lack of security have brought all preservation work to a halt and left the fragile structures exposed to the elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe site may face a disaster, and collapses are possible,\u201d archaeologist Mahmoud Suleiman said, warning that the more than three-year conflict has prevented experts from carrying out basic maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Located about 200km (125 miles) north of Khartoum, Meroe is home to more than 200 narrow, steep-sided pyramids built between 800 BC and 350 AD as tombs for rulers of the Kingdom of Kush.<\/p>\n<p>Guards said windblown sand and encroaching vegetation are accelerating their decay. \u201cThe sand has thickened heavily on the pyramids and even inside the temples, and the grass grows thick,\u201d guard Mustafa Ahmed said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pyramids have deteriorated greatly, and stones have begun to fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antiquities inspector Mohamed Mubarak said salt released from accumulated sand is attacking the \u201cinherently fragile\u201d stones, eroding ancient inscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Suleiman said climate change, the dispersal of Sudan\u2019s archaeological workforce and the halt of foreign missions have all contributed to \u201csignificant deterioration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO has warned that more than 100 cultural sites have been damaged and at least 22 museums looted or destroyed since the war began in April 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"l-col l-col--text-center l-col--10--centered gallery-images\">\n<figure class=\"gallery-image\">\n<div class=\"react_lightgallery_item\">\n<div class=\"responsive-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gallery-image-item gallery-image-key-4833145-4833139\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP26217730225293-1786002203.jpg?fit=1170%2C780&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Sudan Meroe Pyramids\" aria-label=\"Gallery image 2 of 11, Click to open in gallery view, Sudan Meroe Pyramids\" role=\"button\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"gallery-4833145-0\">Pyramids at Meroe rise from the desert about 200km (125 miles) north of Khartoum in Sudan\u2019s River Nile state.
