legitimacy more than five years after seizing power.<\/p>\n<p>President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Thailand\u2019s capital on Thursday, on his first official visit to the country since taking power in class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Myanmar remains in the midst of a bloody civil war triggered by the coup, which has killed more than 100,000 people, according to monitoring group Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data (ACLED).<\/p>\n<p>During a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Min Aung Hlaing stressed that Myanmar\u2019s military-backed government was focused on ending the civil war and restoring peace to the resource-rich country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMyanmar has now reestablished itself on the path to democracy and is moving toward a better future,\u201d Min Aung Hlaing said. \u201cAs the new government, we have now begun working on national stability, peace, and national reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Min Aung Hlaing is pushing for Myanmar to be readmitted to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), from which his government was <a href=\"\/news\/2026\/1\/30\/asean-does-not-recognise-myanmars-elections-as-of-now-philippine-fm\">barred<\/a> after failing to implement a peace plan agreed with member states in 2021.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Thailand is one of Myanmar\u2019s top foreign investors and has called for a \u201ccalibrated re-engagement approach\u201d with its neighbour, with which it shares a 2,400km (1500-mile) border.<\/p>\n<p>Following the meeting, the two leaders delivered speeches at the Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum.<\/p>\n<p>Anutin said Thailand and Myanmar are ready to \u201cstep into the new chapter of economic cooperation that is built upon mutual trust and benefit for the people of the two countries\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\">\n<div class=\"ads\"><span class=\"ads__title\"> Advertisement <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Min Aung Hlaing told attendees they could \u201cinvest with confidence\u201d in Myanmar\u2019s energy, agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, technology and other sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The visit has drawn criticism from activist groups such as Justice For Myanmar, which stated that the trip lends \u201cfalse legitimacy\u201d to Min Aung Hlaing and the ruling generals.<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen demonstrators gathered outside the United Nations regional headquarters in Bangkok to oppose the visit. Some protesters could be seen holding placards denouncing him as a \u201ccriminal\u201d who was not welcome in Thailand.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;position:relative;min-width:0px;max-width:770px\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as president of Myanmar in April following an election that UN experts dismissed as a \u201csham\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Western governments have shunned and sanctioned Min Aung Hlaing and his associates for overthrowing Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s government.
